Dutch Romans

At OOOMS we are intrigued by the history of The Netherlands.
A great way to get into contact with products of the past is by metal detecting. The idea that any signal could be a historical treasure is a feeling that’s highly addictive.

Now the finds have become an inspiration for a new OOOMS project; Dutch Romans. These are macro images of 2000 year old Roman coins that have been found in the Netherlands. While the focus with metal detecting is mainly on pristine quality, with the Dutch Romans project we are fascinated by the corrosion process, and the shapes and colors that come to life.

The coins that are used are all determined by professional archeologists. Each print carries the name of the emperor that once was clearly visible on the coins.  In the description you can read the time period the coins were made, which is around 50 AD for most of them!

Titus 01 | 79-81 AD Titus 02 | 79-81 AD Domitianus 01 | 81-96 AD Domitianus 02 | 81-96 ADNero 01 | 54-68 AD Nero 02 | 54-68 AD Vespasianus 01 | 69-79 AD Traianus 01 | 98-117 AD

Lost & Found in Singapore

Studio OOOMS has been invited to conduct a 5 day workshop at the Singapore Polytechnic. The title of the workshop is “Lost and Found”. This title is based on the free materials that have lost their original function and for which a new function will be found. The group assignment demands a real hands on approach, as well as the ability to make quick decisions and to be creative with limited materials. The programme places an emphasis on practice-oriented, creative work, complemented by short presentations and discussions.

If you like to see the PDF brochure about our workshops, click here.
More photo’s of the workshop can be found on our facebook page.

Schizo Vase

The word schizophrenia is derived from the Greek words for to split (schidzein) and mind (phren). This splitting is related to fragmenting of the thought processes. OOOMS used this as inspiration to create a  vase with a ribbed surface which creates two different shapes. The outside shape is based on a Greek Amphora vase. The inner shape is inspired by an brass Indian flower vase.

Roadkill Carpet

Do you know the feeling that you do not want to take a look at something, but you still do? The Roadkill carpet is a continuous struggle between attraction and repulsion. It’s a warm, soft, cuddly carpet that attracts you to take a nap on it. But at the same time its a repulsive image of a car-flattened, bloody fox.

Firewood

There is a primal link between man and fire. Every man should know how to start one. A manly man knows how to start one without matches.
OOOMS has designed a kit for you to master this primitive skill.
And whether or not you ever need to call upon these skills, it’s just cool to know you can start a fire, whenever and wherever you are.

Ffrash

OOOMS was invited to co-operate in a project to help former street children in Jakarta, Indonesia. This project is called Ffrash and is initiated and organized by Gina Provo Kluit, a Dutch woman who is living in Jakarta.

The main assignment for OOOMS was to design a collection of interior products, by re-using waste material. Besides that we had to train former street children and teach them how to make these products.

Ffrash collection

One of the goals was to improve their workshop skills and teach the youngsters the principles of design and entrepreneurship. By doing this they have a better chance of finding a job. The profit generated by the sales of the Ffrash products will be used to support KDM, the shelter that provides the street children a home, education, attention and much more. This is also the location where the workshop has been set up.

Our first visit to Jakarta was in August 2012. During two weeks we’ve visited many interesting and sometimes smelly sites of the city. We noticed there is a tremendous amount of trash filling the streets and clogging the city’s sewer system. We spend our time collecting as much information as possible about the different waste materials, and meeting the parties involved, like the Dutch Embassy, Intercontinental and KLM.

Back at our studio we used all our spare time to work on the project. We executed many experiments involving plastics, glass, metal, microwave ovens, blenders and blowtorches. By the time we had to leave for Jakarta again we developed a large number of concepts and ideas and left with a flexible mindset to be prepared for the unexpected.

Our work in Jakarta has been a great experience with many challenges and surprises, but already a success on its own. We’ve bought machines, set up the workshop, made prototypes and trained the youngsters. The selected youngsters make a great team and rarely have we seen such enthusiasm and motivation!

August 2013 OOOMS has been in Jakarta for the third time to fine-tune the designs and add new products to the collection. We are really proud to present this first interior product collection for Ffrash. The official launch of the Ffrash collection has been held during the Dutch Design Week 2013  in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. www.oooms.nl/dutch-design-week-2013

Puzzleboard XL

Thanks to all the positive responses to our original Puzzleboard we decided to introduce a chunkier version.

The surface of this extra large wooden board makes it a very versatile kitchen utensil. It can be used as a cutting block, as a serving tray or a plate for a special course. Connecting more pieces together will create a great presentation on every dinner table.

Solar Birdhouse

Why would only humans make use of eco-friendly technology?
OOOMS designed a birdhouse with a solar panel on it’s roof. During the day sunlight feeds the solar panel, charging a small battery inside. At twilight the transparent stick will light up and cast a tiny light on your garden. This light attracts an easy night time snack for the bird; all she has to do is stick her beak out of the hole and wait for the buzz.

Schizo Lamp

The word schizophrenia is derived from the Greek words for to split (schidzein) and mind (phren). This splitting is related to fragmenting of the thought processes. OOOMS used this as inspiration to design a lamp where the ribbed surface creates two different shapes. The inner shape is a classic lampshade. The outside is more neutral, and looks a bit like a beehive. When turned on, the inner shape of the Schizo Lamp will be emphasized due to the translucency of the material.

The Schizo Lamp is made from EPS, a material which makes the design very light weighted. A transparent finish makes the lamp durable and easy to clean, while maintaining its natural colour.

Our Schizo Lamp is now available at:

Wire-frame Table

The Wire-frame collection came into existence because of a great fascination of the wire-frame phase in the design process. The wire-frame structures are designed by computer using 3D software and after that they are made by hand.
