About one third of Holland (meaning ‘Hollow Land’) is below sea level. Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is built in the middle of a former lake Flevoland, which is also reclaimed from sea, is on average 8 metres below sea-level, The concept of “Hollow Land’ highlights the fact that Holland is not only flat, but below sea level as well. These topographical depressions are as iconic as wooden shoes and tulips. A mould is made of a hole in the ground, somewhere in the Netherlands. From the mould, a perfect replica of the hole is produced in ceramics.
